A Cavalry officer, he was assigned to command the 89th Infantry Division on January 22, 1945. Attached to General Patton’s 3rd Armored Division for the crossing of the Rhine and the final offensive against the Third Reich.

A veteran of the Second World War and the Korean War, Lt. Colonel V.J. Blondell is buried in Arlington Military Cemetery, USA.
