US 28th Infantry Division cotton shoulder badge.

The division left the United States on 8 October 1943 for England, where it began training for the invasion of northern France.

On 22 July 1944, the division landed in Normandy, seven weeks after the first D-Day landing, and participated in Operation Cobra.

It was originally nicknamed the “Keystone Division” because it was formed from units of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard (known as the “Keystone State”).

During World War II, German forces gave it the nickname “Bloody Bucket” division because of the shape and colour of its red keystone insignia.
