Cotton patch of the 8th US Infantry Division.

The 8th Division was activated on 1 July 1940 and arrived on the European mainland on 4 July 1944 and elements began their World War II fighting on 6 July, with the entire division being committed on 8 July 1944.

Landing on Utah Beach, the 8th captured Rennes in August and Brest in September and would continue fighting until Germany.

Since their first action in July, they had suffered 2,532 killed in action, 10,057 wounded, 288 of whom would die, and had advanced as far as Schwerin when the Germans surrendered, ending the 8th Infantry Division’s 288 days of fighting.
