The XIX Corps initially named III Armored Corps, was activated on August 20, 1942 under the command of Major General Willis D. Crittenberger.

On January 7, 1944, the XIX Corps left the United States for England.  The XIX Corps participated in the organization of Operation Neptune, for the D-Day landings in France. While the divisions that were to operate under XIX Corps maneuvered and perfected their plans on Salisbury Plain, the XIX Corps staff developed landing plans shortly after D-Day, as the first of the building corps, to take control of the central sector and advance on Saint-Lô, the strategic communications center of Normandy.
