Major Herman Dammer’s organization of the Rangers
Following the impressive performance of the 1st Ranger Battalion in the North African campaign, the 3rd Ranger Battalion was organized in Morocco on June 19, 1943. The battalion was made up of American volunteers and led by Major Herman Dammer. The battalion took part in the invasion of Sicily and the invasion of Italy; it was essentially decimated at the Battle of Cisterna in early 1944 and subsequently deactivated.
